Dwarf Bunny

Most of us probably don’t even know that the Dwarf bunny rabbit exists, but it does! They are not a different species of rabbit but more just a dwarf variety of the normal rabbit that we all know and love. The species parent for most of them is the European domestic rabbit that has been around for years.
As their name suggest these dwarfs are rabbits that are much smaller than a standard sized rabbit and when you wee them you will be surprised at how small they really are. But because of their small bunny stature they are even cuter that a normal pet rabbits.

If you already kept rabbits as pets you will already know how much fun they are and of course they are very easy to keep. With the dwarf bunny variety it is even easier as these pets require a lot less room than their standard sized brothers and sisters and so costs are reduced as well.

These little rabbits are capable of breeding with the normal sized variety so bear that in mind if you are going to have both sizes as pets at home. These tiny rabbits have been bred deliberately to be the small size that they are and of course during this process the cutest of those bred will have been picked so be assured that all dwarf rabbits are really cute!

But of course you can different varieties of the dwarf bunny that are the result of breeding between selected rabbits to produce some that look different, have different attribute or features and a physically different in appearance or stature. What this means to you is that you will have many dwarf bunny varieties to chose from should you decide to go ahead and get one or two as pets for yourself or your kids.

The original breeding programs for these small mini-rabbits was started when a dwarf gene was originally detected in the European rabbit and now there are a ton of these small rabbit versions.

You should take note that not all the dwarf bunnies you see advertised in pet shops are actually real true dwarfs as they are more than likely larger as they are often a cross between a dwarf and a standard rabbit. So therefore you should be careful in your initial research and then on choosing an individual rabbit as a pet.

Anyway whichever variety or size you choose and however they look you really can’t go wrong when buying a rabbit as a pet.

Kids just adore them so much that they really are worth the small investment that you will have to make both in the purchase price, accessories, food and your time. Your kids will love you for it!

Because many of the dwarf bunny rabbits displayed and sold as dwarves in your local pet shops are not really of the true dwarf rabbit variety, but dwarf and standard rabbit crosses you need to be vigilant. In most cases your local pet store should not be trusted to give you the best advice!
Because many of the dwarf bunny rabbits displayed and sold as dwarves in your local pet shops are not really of the true dwarf rabbit variety, but dwarf and standard rabbit crosses you need to be vigilant.

These cross rabbit varieties are often know as rabbit mongrels and you need to know that they will without doubt grow up to be bigger in size than you are expecting and that they will then also not have that characteristically small head of a true dwarf rabbit or the low carriage, which is also so characteristic of the small variety.

The good news though is that these small rabbits also have small diets and small sized accommodation requirements so in effect they are cheaper to run than their much bigger relatives.

And just like all the other domestic pet rabbits you might have kept before, these little dwarf rabbits will happily eat succulent greens as well as grass and some grains. But you also need to be aware that they are not as hardy in what they are able to consume as the original European rabbits and their digestive system is therefore a bit more fragile.

So if you have a dwarf bunny then please remember not to feed it the more leafy type of vegetable such as cabbages or lettuce as these could make them ill and introduce more long term health problems, which will not make your rabbit or you very happy! Also stay away from any type of seeds or nuts when putting together a diet plan for your dwarf rabbit as these are even more harmful to them.

When it comes to the really true and pure bred dwarf rabbit varieties you will quickly notice that both their heads and their eyes will look much larger in relation to the size of their small bodies than in a standard rabbit. In addition their ears will appear smaller and they will look like they are being held up higher on the rabbit’s head, which of course they are.

There is now even a variety of these amazingly cute rabbits that has long dangly ears, but these are hard to find. Because there are now so many different breeds of dwarf bunny rabbit you will find that there are many different color variations as well, all the way from white to black with a ton of appealing combinations in between to get you excited about your next cuddly pet!

Always do your research thoroughly and also checkout some real living examples at the pet store before you buy. Some interesting breeds you might want to look out for are the Himalayan red, the blue dwarf, the white-tipped blacks, the Chinchilla and the Siamese (not a cat, but a little tiny rabbit!). All of these make great pets!
Just as with all other domestic pet rabbits the Dwarf bunnies will in general also have just the exact same behavioral characteristics, so they really are not different from a standard rabbit, except for their smaller size.

You will find that they can be easily house trained and are quite happy to socialize with your pet cats and dogs and of course your hamsters if you have any.

My favorite pet is our small black dwarf bunny, which we have called Casper and who we have had for two years now.

Recently we bought another because our kids just love Casper so much and now the two of them play together constantly and to be honest having two is much more fun than, especially when the initial novelty of just a single rabbit has passed somewhat. So you could get two, but leave the second until later…

Their compact size makes a couple of dwarf bunnies a much more attractive proposition and that’s because a pair of the full sized variety could be just a bit too much to handle, where as with the little ones they are really no problem at all.

This is especially true when it comes to buying and locating their accommodation facilities in your home as they really do not need that much space, although of course they do love to be let out and run around at all times!

A rabbit hutch is of course essential to house your dwarf bunny pets and a rabbit run out in the yard or your garden is also a great idea. However also note that many owners will not leave their precious little bunnies out at night due to both the potential issues of bad weather and predators.

It’s always better to be safe rather than sorry when the pets you love so much are concerned, especially if they are your kids pets. Some even stay as house rabbits for their whole lives!

You just have to make sure you treat them a little bit more gentle than the standard sized rabbits and they will always be so much fun for kids.

Dwarf Bunny

What we really like about or first dwarf bunny was that we knew that when it grew up ip would still be easy for the kids to handle. It would never get to big and awkward for them to pick up and cuddle, unlike a standard rabbit which will often never get picked up once it reaches adult age. Our bunnies started small and will stay that way forever.
And that is why we also eventually decided to have two of them as they always stay small. Dwarf bunny rabbits, just like the much bigger normal breeds are very sociable and just love to be with other rabbits and seeing two together all day and every day is just so sweet. They really are totally adorable together!

Two dwarf bunnies will play together all day and practice mutual grooming which is always fun to watch, and of course, they constantly keep each other amused. This is good for the rabbits and good for our family too as there is always rabbit entertainment going on at home.

Having two rabbits together also makes them both more active as they follow each other and always want to see what the other is doing. This is great as it keeps them exercised and therefore healthier too. And well all agree in our family that a busy rabbit is a happy rabbit!

So keeping them in pairs really is a good idea as they are so small, compact and very easy to handle. This is perfect for you younger kids as these miniature dwarf bunny rabbits are exactly the right size for them.

Here’s another great tip if you thinking about getting a new pair of dwarf bunny rabbits at the same. Try to buy two that are from the same litter as siblings will bond a lot better and will already probably be bonded when you get them. Sibling rabbits will be more compatible with each other and make happier rabbits for sure.

Also if you are concerned with the sex of the rabbits (not what they do, but what they are!) then get this checked out properly by a vet and do not rely on your local pet store to do this properly. If this is important to you then get it done the right way – it may cost to do this, but it will stop unwanted litters and more rabbits than you bargained for!

If you can you should really buy your dwarf bunny rabbits from a specialist breeder as they will be really happy listen to your concerns and also answer any of your questions about the baby bunnies that they are selling. They will sex them for free and provide you with the best dwarf bunny advice that you might need as they really do know what they are talking about!
